On the nights of November 5 and 6, residents of the hyperborean areas of Europe and America were given a rare treat of spectacular Northern Lights in the night sky. This was caused by a recent solar storm. Huge explosions on the sun's surface eject coronal particles into space. When these particles reach Earth, the magnetic fields pull them towards the North and South poles. These particles hit gaseous molecules in the air and we see the reflection in the form of lightwaves. Oxygen molecules throw up green light waves while Nitrogen reflects red lightwaves. The spectacular colours seen in the sky are called aurora borealis or Northern Lights in the Northern Hemisphere and australis in the Southern Hemisphere.
It is common to see a mix and interplay of colours and rare to see a single colour. On nights of Nov 5 and 6, the skies were blood or crimson red over Crimean and the Ukranian regions. Here are some images of blood skies over these troubled regions. The more religious folks may feel perhaps God is sending a message.
Elsewhere, the usual varied colours of aurora borealis can also be seen. Here is an image of an unusual night sky over Stone Henge in Souhern part of England.
